Our Kiwanis Club is one of Lehigh Acres' oldest civic organizations, having chartered in April of 1968. No other club in our community has contributed more money, time and volunteer hours to youth, elderly, or those in need than Kiwanis. That is a record our members are proud of and one that requires our organization to reach out and continually enlist others to energize our ranks. Our charitable funds are raised through the generous donations to and by our customers’ patronage of the KIWANIS THRIFT STORE, which falls under the Kiwanis Club of Lehigh Acres Foundation.
We are part of Kiwanis International—a global community of clubs, members and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time. Today, we stand with more than 550,000 members from K-Kids to Key Club to Kiwanis and many ages in between in 80 countries and geographic areas. Each community has different needs, and Kiwanis empowers members to pursue creative ways to serve the needs of children, such as fighting hunger, improving literacy and offering guidance. Funding is a result of the many volunteer hours provided by members and others at the LEHIGH KIWANIS THRIFT STORE. Kiwanis receives generous tax-deductible donations of unwanted, useful household items such as: clothing and accessories, furniture, sporting goods, appliances, fixtures, tools, books, luggage... you name it—we probably have it! The merchandise is resold, which generates funds to sponsor our projects.
Each year in September, Kiwanis prepares a budget of giving contributions and funding support to its many sponsored programs. This past year over $100,000 was appropriated to the various programs. On an annual basis the Kiwanis Club of Lehigh Acres commits about $88,000 annually for scholarships to the youth of the community. (To obtain a scholarship application, go to the FORMS ACCESS tab on this site).
The Club contributes approximately $40,000 in youth programs through our Service Leadership (SLP) Program: Kiwanis Clubs at the local schools: Elementary (K-Kids), Middle (Builders Club), High School (Key Club) and Students with Special Needs (Aktion Club).
